I have been busy as a bee of late and I have not been able to update my list of favorite books. It is long overdue and at long last I found myself sitting in the garden with a good book and a few snacks to keep me company. The Author of the book was none other than James Herriot and I has buried my nose in his book called ‘All Things Wise And Wonderful’.
I was introduced to James Herriot by an old lady who ran sat in our local library. She knew that I loved animals and I loved to read. In fact, I shall forever be grateful for her piece of advice. I’m also glad that I paused to listen. I am a bit particular when I go to a library. For me the rooms are sacred and the silence is golden!
Each of his books tells about part of James Herriot’s life. He was a Yorkshire country vet who loved his work but encountered his share of difficulties. ‘All Things Wise And Wonderful’ is the third volume in his series of memoirs. It talks about the time he spent training as an RAF pilot. London may have been far different from what it is today but James Herriot still describes it as smokey and bustling.
He left his life in Darrowby as a country vet to serve his queen by joining the RAF. The journey was far from easy. James Herriot has a delightful way of swerving from the present to the past and back again to the present. He connects a number of incidents that happened in his RAF career with his life in Darrowby. With a pregnant wife at home it isn’t a wonder that he reminisces so much.
While I know that there are a number of books written about animals, I find that James Herriot has a style that is truly unique to him. His narration makes it apparent just how much he knows about his work. It reflects on his passion and his love for his job. Life back then was not without its own set of difficulties. Difficulties that we would probably find shocking today. James Herriot narrates it all with a flair that puts a smile on your face as you read.
Tim passed really quickly while I was reading. I started out at breakfast and before I knew it, the lights were being turned on in my house. To me a good book is one that you fail to put down. James Herriot definitely has many of those.
I thoroughly enjoyed ‘All things Wise And Wonderful’. It is one of the few books that I would give a 5 star rating to!It is book for animal lovers. The humor in the book is definitely an added bonus.
