With two posts of Cat-ologue up on the site, I thought it was time for me to start on the third. This time I’m writing about how and why you need to keep your cat entertained. Before we go to the how let us deal with the why.
WHY DO YOU NEED TO KEEP YOUR CAT ENTERTAINED?
Everyone agrees that a cat that stays indoors lives a much longer and healthier life than one that wanders on the streets. This is largely due to the fact that it is vaccinated, neutered, dewormed and given adequate amounts of nutrition. Unlike its other feline counterparts, an indoor cat does not have to hunt for its food. Its instincts however will always tell it to do so. So you can land up in either of the two situations.
Your cat is active and always on the prowl. It chases imaginary beings and on an odd occasion the cat may even endeavor to catch mosquitoes and flies that enter your house. This is a phase that is usually seen in younger cats and kittens. They need a constant source of attention and will stop at nothing to get it. While it is endearing, it can sometimes get on your nerves. Don’t worry there is a solution to it! We will discuss it a little later in the article.
This is a situation that generally arises with older cats. The lack of the need to hunt makes the cat lazy. It sleeps all day and this in turn has its own problems. The cat slowly starts getting obese and obesity can lead to a slew of health hazards.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO KEEP YOUR CAT ENTERTAINED?
Keeping your cat entertained can be fun and it can be tiresome. You need to draw the line between both. Take a look at some of the best solutions that help keep your cat active as well as out of trouble.
GET YOUR CAT A COMPANION
Every animal needs social interaction to keep them happy. The best way to keep your cat entertained is to get them a companion. A feline companion… That is why you will find that the Bangalore Cat Squad the two over one policy. This means that two kittens/cats are always better than one. One of the main reasons behind this philosophy is the fact that two cats keep each other company. You will never be able to give your cat the same amount of activity that another cat can provide.
It also means that the cat will stop being clingy. You can play with your cat on your own terms and not on the cat’s terms. An added bonus is that you don’t have to feel guilty if you are too tired to entertain your cat. You cat won’t mind either.
MAKE YOUR CAT SOME TOYS
Making cat toys is relatively easy. All that it requires is a little creativity and a little time. In fact Sanjana Jayadev frequently conducts workshops that teach both adults and children how to make these toys. You can catch her at any of the Bangalore Cat Squad adoption drives.
BUY SOME INTERACTIVE CAT TOYS
A number of interactive cat toys exist in the market. Sadly not all of them are available in India. To find one you will have to literally scour the market. I have found that a large section of the pet shops deal with dog related toys. Very small sections (if any deal) deal with toys for cats. It isn’t a wonder that most of us choose to make our own toys.
Cat trees are an option that is available but they don’t come cheap. Cat trees act as a combination of a playpen for your cat as well as a scratching post. This essentially can help keep your cat entertained. It is your cat’s own special zone to sleep, play and enjoy. Like I said before Cat trees are expensive.
Making one on your own can be a long and tedious journey. I know because my husband made one and it stands proudly in the living room of our house. Getting a carpenter to make one isn’t cheap either. You need the materials and you have to pay him for his time.
AND THE WINNER IS….
My verdict is that toys are expensive and overrated. Yes… You can get your cat a toy but you need to be around and interested in playing with your cat. People who adopt a single cat enjoy playing with their new pet for awhile. Over time this interest dwindles and the poor cat is left to find its own sources of entertainment.
The real winner is getting another pet. Two cats are always better than one. It is definitely less expensive than buying toys. The amount of work that you put into looking after two cats is the same as one. So why hesitate? Get your cat a companion today!
Oh and before we wind off take a look at this hilarious video between a cat and her owner. It will tell you exactly how to introduce the two cats!
