Wet cat food is very popular among the cat fraternity. Many people use wet cat food swatches that are available in the market. There are plenty of canned food products that are available in India. While some of them are good, not all of them measure up to the standards that cats require.
If you have read my article Royal Canin Dry Cat food, you will know that dry cat food needs to constitute mainly of animal protein. The same holds true when you talk about wet cat food.
Considerations To Make When Choosing Wet Cat Food
With the number of options that are available in the market, we find ourselves being overwhelmed. The temptation to make the choice based on price is surely tempting but there is much more that you need to consider when buying wet cat food.
While most of us think that wet cat food is purely meat, it isn’t true. A lot of the wet cat food contains other additives. PetMd explains that the first key ingredient in the wet cat food needs to be meat. Grains do not play an important role. So if you don’t see grains in the first few listed ingredients then don’t worry.
In fact, avoid wet cat food that contains fillers like corn and rice. These contain a high level of carbohydrates which are not essential in the diet. They serve in adding bulk to the food. They in turn also add bulk to your cat. This can make your cat suffer from obesity related problems in the future.
Me-O Wet Cat Food
Me-O is one of the cheaper varieties of wet cat food that is available in the Indian market. The main ingredients include tuna (or which ever other kind of fish base that you select). Now since this is the first stated ingredient, it means that this is the ingredient in the largest quantity.
Other ingredients include Vitamin D3, water and jelly powder. Each of the flavors has varied ingredients. A closer look at the label will tell you that the Me-O Wet cat food also contains Soyabean oil, food coloring, modified starch and guar gum. Now the first item on the list is an animal based protein which means that it is present in the largest quantities. The animal based protein provides the cat with the requisite nutrients that include taurine amino acid. Those who know their cat’s required diet well will know that taurine is important for a cat’s heart and vision.
WHISKAS WET FOOD
Whiskas wet cat food is another popular choice among cat lovers in India. It is slightly more expensive when compared to the Me-O versions. People don’t mind buying Whiskas wet cat food because it is freely available and many people associate it with quaility.
I however rarely go on hearsay alone. That’s why I did a little research into the contents that Whiskas has to offer. The top two ingredients that are mentioned are water and the base meat that is used. This means that a large proportion of the wet cat food is composed of water and animal protein. It is exactly what your cat needs to eat.
The other ingredients are corn starch modified (carbohydrate), soy oil and Guar gum. There are a number of other ingredients which includes taurine, vitamin and mineral supplements.
Whiskas also has wet cat food which is catered to the needs of kittens. They have called these products ‘Whiskas Junior’. This diet is designed for kittens till the age of 1 year.
Royal Canin is the more expensive of the three products mentioned. It however has a advantage that the other two do not have. It has diets that are catered to different age groups and individualized cat diets. Let’s take a look at each one.
The Royal Canin Instinctive Wet Cat Food
The Royal Canin adult instinctive wet cat food is meant for the average adult cat. The contents have a large quantity of animal products. The top ingredients in this wet cat food are water, pork by-products and chicken by-products. The animal protein does not stop with these three ingredients. It also contains chicken liver and pork liver. Smaller quantities of chicken liver hydrolysate and pork plasma.
The fat requirements are provided by vegetable oil and fish oil. The carbohydrate content is considerably less when compared to Whiskas and Me-O. From what I can see the main sources carbohydrates come from brewers rice flour and wheat gluten. It also includes an assortment of different minerals and vitamins that are essential for a cats day to day life.
Royal Canin even goes on to tell us that each kilogram of this wet cat food diet contains 786 kilocalories of energy.
The Royal Canin Ultra Light Wet Range Cat Food
The next diet that bears consideration is the Royal Canin Ultra Light Wet Range cat food. This wet cat food is similar to the Instinctive adult wet cat food but it contains 15 percent less calories. This makes it perfect for a cat that needs to trim a little on the waist. It is a diet that helps to support lean body mass.
Royal Canin Intense Beauty
Most of the people who own cats with long fur worry about the quality of the fur. Many coats don’t shine which can be attributed to the lack of grooming or to the lack of adequate nutrition. This Royal Canin wet cat food however deals with the latter.
The Royal Canin intense beauty contains 875 kilocalories of energy per kilogram. It uses a cat specific macro nutrient profile to ensure that the cat gets enough nutrients to keep its coat shiny and healthy.
Royal Canin Kitten Instinctive
You do need to remember that a kitten has a different nutritional requirement compared to an adult cat. Royal Canin has ensured that it has developed a diet to suit a kitten’s needs. They call their product the ‘Kitten Instinctive’.
The wet cat food is made into small chunks which are easy for a kitten to nibble on. The components of this product help to support the immune system too. The ingredients are similar to that of the adult instinctive wet cat food but the quantities and proportions are tittered to a kittens needs.
Royal Canin Food For Sterilized Cats
A neutered or sterilized cat has its own nutritional requirements. They have moderate energy levels and this could result in weight gain. To ensure that these cats maintain a proper body weight and are healthy, Royal Canin has developed a wet cat food diet called ‘Sterilised’.
It has a caloric count of 745 kilocalories for every kilogram of wet cat food.
Sheba is another popular brand of cat food that is available in the market. This seems to be the most expensive of the lot. It comes in three varieties: Fish, Tuna fillets and whole prawn, Tuna white meat and snapper and Chicken. While there are other flavors that are available, I think these are the only two that are available in the market.
The chicken flavor contains animal protein in the wet cat food is made available by including ingredients like chicken, chicken broth, chicken liver and poultry by-products. In addition to this, it also includes meat by-products.
The chicken flavor is just an example. Each of the other flavors contain a large amount of animal protein. When you open the tin, you will find actual pieces of chicken and fish inside.
Whiskas and Me-O wet cat food when opened looks like a gelatinous mass. This mass needs to be broken up into smaller pieces before serving the cat. Cats with a brachycephalic face (i.e. flat face) have problems related to chewing and eating. These large gelatinous masses are difficult for them to bite and chew so they struggle quite a bit. The flatter the face, the more the cat has a problem.
Royal Canin wet cat food and Sheba wet cat food comes in small easily eatable chunks and shreds. This makes this perfect for these breeds.
At the end of the day, the kind of wet cat food that you buy depends on what you can afford. Each brand has its own peculiarities. Unlike dry food, there isn’t one particular brand that I would advice. In my opinion, home cooked food will always be the best. What do you think?
