We have spoken about ‘Closed Litter boxes’ and even about which one among them are The Best Closed Litter Boxes‘. A topic which hasn’t been covered so far is the use of an Open Litter Box. That’s why I thought I would do a little research as to why people prefer an Open Litter Box. I also dug into the options that are available here in India and I must say that I am disappointed.
THE OPEN LITTER BOX
The Open Litter Box is the simplest kind of cat litter box. It mimics the cats natural toilet in a few ways. Out in the wild, a cat will choose a spot that is sandy (or has relatively loose soil) so that she can dig her claws into it. The Open Litter Box is filled with cat litter which is similar if not better.
The Open Litter Box is nothing but a basin or a flat bottomed bowl. Something like the bowl that is displayed on your right hand side. Now if you look at this particular bowl you will realize that the height of the bowl is all wrong. It is way too high for the cat to jump in and out off.
That is the reason why this kind of basin can not work as an Open Litter Box.
Another problem of using conventional basins is the holes that come along with them. Yes that’s right. Most of the conventional basins have tiny holes which are a result of the weaving design that is used. The cat litter can easily slip through these holes and this becomes a messy situation. The picture on your left is a prime example.
If you do find a basin which has the right height for an Open Litter box and does not have the weaved design, you may find that the basin is a wee bit too small. I’ve searched high and low for a basin to suit my needs but it wasn’t long before I threw my hands up in frustration. It isn’t a wonder that most cat parents turn to Pet stores to find a basin that has been tried and tested.
Yes! The Open Cat Litter boxes on the market have been designed to suit your cat and create a perfect replica of its natural toilet!
WHY USE AN OPEN LITTER BOX?
The use of an Open Litter Box has many advantages. Let’s take a look at a few.
- Cats poop and pee in open spaces and not in a closed environment. The Open Litter Box helps provide a replica of this space in your home. Remember that while cats choose open spaces, they like the spaces to be isolated from predators. That’s why you need to place the Open Litter Box in an isolated part of the house.
- Cats are picky creatures. They don’t like an unclean litter box nor one that smells. Closed litter boxes may trap the smell of a urine and feces inside. A very particular cat may not use the litter box unless it is cleaned frequently. An Open Litter Box on the other hand is well ventilated. This means that the smell is considerably less.
- Cats arch their back when the scratch in the litter box. A closed litter box may prove to be too cramped for a large sized cat. An Open Litter Box on the other hand provides more freedom and space.
An Open Litter Box is designed to suit your cats height and size. They also have a nice curved rim that helps ensure that the litter does not spill out on the ground. It doesn’t always work though. The amount of litter that you will find outside the Open Litter Box is considerably more than the Closed Litter Bo. This is because the litter flies into the air every time the cat scratches.
THE INDIAN MARKET
Unfortunately for us, all kinds of cat products are limited in the Indian market. My search for a good open litter box turned up only a few alternatives. I’ve seen both the alternatives in use. While both of them are good, they both have their disadvantages. Let’s take a look at them.
The Trixie Classic Cat Litter Tray With Rim
The Trixie Classic Cat Litter Tray with a rim does not have a very unique design. Then again to find an Open litter box that does is almost impossible. This litter box is rectangular in shape. The length, breath and depth are 48.2 cms, 38.1 cms and 15.2 cms respectively.
The rim of the litter box is detachable. This helps in cleaning. Once you detach the rim it is easy to scoop out the litter that lies within. The product comes in three colors. Namely purple/liliac, brown/cream and light grey/dark grey.
Solar’s Cat Litter Box
The Solar Cat litter box is very similar to the Trixie product with one exception. It is a little smaller! The depth of this open litter box has not been mentioned so I can’t really tell you about that comparison. The Solar Cat litter box is 33.5 cms in breadth and 42.5 cms in length.
These two products are great for kittens and small cats. As far as I know, this product comes in only one combination of colors: Blue and white!
Savic Figaro Oval Cat Tray With Rim
When I first saw this open litter box I wasn’t impressed. It looked liked a bed pan that is used for bed ridden patients. As time passed, I slowly realized why the design made absolute sense.
The tiny dip in the rim makes the open litter box accessible to the tiny of tiniest kittens. The higher rim on the other sides ensures that the adult cats don’t scatter the litter outside the litter box either. When compared to the other open litter boxes that I have used, the Savic Figaro Oval Cat tray is by far the largest. It measures 22 inches x 19 inches x 6 inches (length x width x height). Its perfect for multiple cat households. If you have too many cats you may want to consider getting more than one.
An Open litter box is designed for the comfort of a cat and not the owner. If you find that the sight of a open cat litter box is disturbing then you may want to try getting a closed litter box. The same holds true if your cat scatters the litter all over the place.
If your cat does not like closed spaces or is too large to fit into a closed litter box comfortably, you will find yourself stuck with just one option: An Open Litter Box!
