A week or two ago, I put out a post on a number of Facebook pages. I wanted to know what was the most preferred brand of cat litter. Truth be told, I expected a variety of different responses and I was not disappointed! Everyone has their own opinion about which cat litter they find best. While some people like clumping cat litter others don’t. In fact, many people gave a number of options that are really innovative!
TYPES OF CAT LITTER
When you talk about cat litter you need to understand that there are just two types: Clumping cat litter and cat litter which does not clump! Since the choices are vast, let us talk only about clumping cat litter in this post.
CLUMPING CAT LITTER
Clumping cat litter is designed for the ease of the owner. Most of the types of clumping cat litter contains a substance called bentonite. Bentonite forms a hard clay like mass when it comes in contact with fluid. So when a cat decides to pee in this cat litter, it clumps and forms a nice mass.
This mass locks all the odor in and prevents the foul ammonia smell from emanating from the litter. Since the feces of the cat also has some amount of water content, you will find that the particles of the clumping cat litter stick to it and form a seal around it too!
THE BEST CLUMPING CAT LITTER IN INDIA
Let’s take a look at the most frequently used clumping cat litter in India. Be forewarned that there are a number of options out there!
HAPPY CAT LITTER
Happy Cat Litter seemed to rank the highest in almost all the different groups. A number of my cat crazy friends vouched for it too. I’ve used a lot of different types of clumping cat litter during the past year. I must say that I agree with everyone. Happy Cat litter ranks very high on my list because of a few reasons.
- It forms good solid clumps which are easy to scoop out.
- Lasts longer than most litters.
- Forms a good odor locking system.
- All the cats that I have boarded loved it!
- Most importantly, it is reasonably priced!
There is only one downside that I could see with Happy Cat litter. While it has all the characteristics of a good clumping cat litter, you will find that it is not available on Amazon. This means that you need to find a supplier near you who can deliver to your house.
To me home delivery is important because I buy the cat litter in bulk. That means I get a 25 kg bag at a time. Carrying a 25 kg bag around is not easy. Having it delivered to my doorstep just makes everything so much easier!
CAT EXCLUSIVE SCOOPABLE CAT LITTER
One of the first brands of clumping cat litter that I tried was the Cat Exclusive Scoopable Cat Litter. Suffice to say that I was impressed. The clumping cat litter works well and forms a good odor lock against the foul smells.
Another great thing about this product is the fact that Amazon delivers it. Unfortunately for people like me who like to buy cat litter in bulk, the Cat Exclusive Scoopable Cat Litter comes in just a 10 kg bag.
Since this particular clumping cat litter is long lasting, I don’t really mind buying the 10 kg bag. You will however find that the Cat Exclusive Scoopable Cat Litter is slightly more expensive than the Happy Cat Litter.
PURA PREMIUM CLUMPING CAT LITTER
Unlike the previous two brands of clumping cat litter, PURA Premium Clumping Cat Litter
is one brand that I haven’t tried. The reason why it has made the list is because a large number of people have vouched for it!
The price of the Pura Cat Litter seems reasonable and I am told that it functions well as far as the odor lock is concerned. To me those are the main characteristics that a clumping cat litter should have! I think I will give this brand a try the next time I have to make a purchase!
CATS BEST OKOPLUS CLUMPING CAT LITTER
Another brand that was recommended was the Cats Best Okoplus Clumping Litter. I haven’t used this litter either but according to the poll, this particular clumping cat litter lasts longer than most of the other litters. Unlike the other clumping cat litters, this brand uses pure organic fibers. This means that it is environment friendly.
The downside to this product is the fact that it is expensive. I find that it is not something that becomes economical if you have more than two to three cats in the house!
JIMMY CAT LITTER
The only reason why the JiMMy Cat Litter made the list is because a number of people like it. I personally can’t stand it. The cats however seem to have no problem with. Why don’t I like it? Well, the Jimmy Cat Litter has a odor of its own. It is the odor that I can’t stand. Some people don’t mind it because it masks the scent of urine. Me… Well I feel that good odor locking in a clumping cat litter keeps the smell away.
Another issue that I faced was the fact that the litter did not form hard clumps. This meant that every time I went to scoop out the waste, the clump would break. The finer pieces of the clump would then proceed to mix with the good litter. This means that you have to change the litter at more frequent intervals.
The Jimmy Cat litter also tends to send fine dust particles flying every time the cat scratches in the litter box. This aggravated my allergies and increased my dislike for the product!
Despite all this, the Jimmy Cat litter has a lot going for it. It is cheap and by cheap I must emphasize that it is by far the cheapest clumping cat litter that I have come across. It also comes in large amounts (i.e 25 kg bags), which makes it much easier and cheaper to buy. These factors make it a good deal for those of us who foster a large number of kittens. Then again… Like I said, I prefer other brands.
Choosing a good clumping cat litter is important for both your cat and you. Many cats (and humans like me) do not like the smell of a scented cat litter. That however isn’t the only consideration that you need to keep in mind. The clumping cat litter needs to be affordable. It also needs to form good clumps which will act as a seal and prevent the odor from stifling you in your house!
Well… I’ve given you my opinion about the best clumping cat litter out there. What about you? What do you think? What is the best clumping cat litter of the lot?
